An unconventional vicar must exorcise the dark past of a remote village haunted by death and disappearances. Five hundred years ago, Protestant martyrs were betrayed - then burned. Thirty years ago, two teenage girls disappeared without a trace. And a few weeks ago, the vicar of the local parish hanged himself in the nave of the church.

And my first bookreview here on my bookstagram page in 2024. And I’ve actually finished a book at the beginning of January. That’s a first for me.

It’s only fair to say I got the English Version because Richard Armitage is reading it. Unfortunately Gemma Whelan reads way more.
That said, the reason I did choose this book to listen to was because of the intriguing storyline. I could have chosen the Dutch version.

This storyline had me from the start and I couldn’t stop listening to it. Even though it took a lot of concentration on my part, because somehow reading in English is much easier than listening to it. It’s a horror, thriller, whodunnit murder mystery with a very, very unexpected plottwist. I found the characters likeable and well thought out. In the beginning I found it quite confusing because the point of view often changed and I’m not a fan of reading/listening to a first person point of view. That last thing was manageable.

All in all; I’d recommend this story. For the Dutch people: the Dutch title is Brandende Meisjes.

“The greatest gift the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”
